Every stock wood bat on a store wall was turned to one spec for thousands of hitters. This one gets turned to yours.
You choose the model by how you hit — balanced if you want the barrel to turn over quick, end-loaded if you want weight behind the ball. You choose the length and drop the way you'd write it on a lineup card: 33/30, 32/29, whatever your hands already know. Then handle thickness, knob, cupped or uncupped, barrel color, handle color, and the fade between them.
Maple or birch is the real decision. Maple is dense and stiff — the loud, hot-knife feel on a squared-up ball, and the wood most guys mean when they say "pop." Birch has a little give. It flexes instead of fighting you on a ball off the hands, breaks in over the first few rounds, and tends to forgive the mishit that would crack a maple. Contact hitters and anyone moving off metal for the first time usually do well on birch. Power hitters who already square it up usually want maple.
Why wood breaks: the grain runs at an angle through the billet. That's what the ink dot checks — straight grain, right density — and it's why every Ufinit billet gets one before it's turned. Then the finished bat goes on a scale, because a 33/-3 that came off the lathe at 31.5 oz doesn't ship as a 33/-3.

Sweet spot moved down. The end is smaller, tapers up, then tapers back down — putting mass where the ball actually meets the bat for a hitter working the inner half. For anyone who gets jammed a lot or likes to crowd the plate.
