The most common mistake with a kid's first wood bat is buying one they're supposed to grow into. A bat that's an inch too long or two ounces too heavy slows the swing, wrecks timing, and turns the bat into the thing they blame. When in doubt, go lighter. A bat they can swing fast beats a bat they'll fit next spring.
That's the whole point of building it to order. You pick the length and drop for the player you have right now, the model for how they hit (the 203 is the one most parents land on), and the colors they'd actually pick. Their name and number go on the barrel free.
Wood does something metal can't: it tells the truth. Off the end or off the hands, they feel it. On the sweet spot, they feel that too — and that's how a swing gets built. Maple is the harder, louder wood. Birch has a little flex and is more forgiving on mishits — a good call for a younger hitter still finding the barrel. Either way it's the same hand-split pro wood the adult bats come from, just cut to a youth profile.
